Sports physiotherapy is intended for people who have sustained an injury during sports and want to resume their sports activities as soon as possible. Or for people who have sustained an injury in another way that currently prevents them from resuming their sports activities. Also for people who are not currently doing sports but want to. How do you approach this? Which exercise programs are suitable for you? Also if you have a chronic illness or disability?
Professionalism… The sports physiotherapist helps you if you have an injury or are overtrained. You want to get back to work as soon as possible. If necessary with an alternative training schedule, but you want to continue exercising if possible and maintain your condition. A sports physiotherapist understands what happens during exercise and therefore understands how you got injured.
The treatment is tailored to your abilities and on the other hand to the sport you practice. He or she looks at your motor skills and analyses the injury that has occurred. Aspects such as coordination, speed, flexibility, strength and endurance are included in the treatment.
Your sports physiotherapist can choose from various treatment options such as exercise programs with or without the use of training equipment. Braces or taping, mobilization techniques and various supporting and advanced diagnostic or treatment equipment such as can also be part of the treatment.
For which complaints and questions is sports physiotherapy suitable?
Whether physiotherapy can also help your complaint, must become apparent during the screening and/or the intake and examination, but also depends on your own commitment. That sometimes means: doing extra things [exercises], but very often also: LEAVING THINGS! In other words, giving the damaged tissue DOSED REST to heal. Together with the use of specialist equipment, it is often possible to quickly be able to incorporate sports again through dosed rest!
What happens during the first consultation?
If you come without a referral (which is possible these days), an appointment will be made for a screening. During the screening, your complaint will be examined in detail and it will be determined whether there is an indication for sports physiotherapy. It will also be determined whether it is wise for your complaints to be examined by your GP and/or specialist first. If this is the case, the sports physiotherapist will contact your GP and refer you back.
If there is an indication for sports physiotherapy, an intake and examination will follow after the screening. Additional information may be requested and a physical examination will take place. The sports physiotherapist will not only look at the complaint itself, but will also investigate what is causing the complaint. The sports physiotherapist will also look at whether the patient has other physical problems that can be attributed to the complaint. Based on the results, a treatment plan will be drawn up together with you, a prognosis will be given and an appointment for treatment will be made.
Your GP or specialist can also refer you. In that case, no screening will take place, this has already been done by the referring physician. The procedure for referral is the same as above after the screening. In addition, the ultrasound is often used to confirm the diagnosis, to be able to arrive at a good policy and prognosis and to monitor the progression of the recovery.
